This simple, inexpensive craft can render classy results

Embossing velvet is easy, and it makes the fabric "special." I chose to make a pillow with some embossed velvet, adding gold beads and cording to finish it. But you may choose something else, perhaps a throw for the sofa or your bed. Or maybe even a vest for yourself. Whatever your choice, this simple, inexpensive craft helps turn fabric into a finished product that looks like a million bucks. Enjoy!

WHAT YOU NEED
Velvet fabric--do not use polyester or nylon; it will not work. I prefer rayon.

A craft rubber stamp--I used a leaf-patterned stamp. I prefer chunky rubber stamps to the smaller ones.

An iron and a pressing cloth

A spray bottle filled with water

DIRECTIONS

Always practice first on some scrap fabric.

  1. Using straight pins, mark on the wrong side of the fabric where you want to place your embossing pattern.
  2. Heat your iron to the "wool" setting.
  3. Lightly spray a mist of water on the velvet where you intend to emboss your pattern.
  4. Place the rubber stamp on the ironing board with the pattern side facing up.
  5. Place the area of the velvet that you have pre-marked with a pin, face down on the stamp. The stamp and the nap (right side) of the fabric should be face-to-face.
  6. Remove the straight pin.
  7. Place pressing cloth on top.
  8. Set the heated iron on top of the pressing cloth. Being sure to cover the entire stamp area. Hold with even pressure for 1-3 minutes, depending on your particular iron and fabric choice.
  9. Remove the iron and pressing cloth. Voila! There you have it.
  10. Now proceed to emboss the rest of the fabric.
